A personal worst that was so much fun - Princess half recap

My fourth Princess Half marathon turned into a wonderful race day despite being the slowest half I have ever run.  With orders from my coach to take the race slow and easy after racing the 10k on Saturday, I had plans to just enjoy the course, costumes and perhaps take a few photos along the way.  My goal was fun and nothing else.  After getting up promptly at 3:00am, Alison and I were headed to the bus stop at 3:15am for our ride to Epcot and the race area.
2 sisters ready to race!
After a porta potty stop, we went to the corrals early to have time to stretch and warm up a little.  I barely got into the corral when Lisa, who had paced me for the 10k, stopped to say hi and wish me a good race. Michele came over soon after and kept me company until the race start.  I also met another runner, Bridget who joined in the fun, but I forgot to get a photo with her.
Michele had such a cute Ariel costume!

As always, the start line was beautiful with lots of eager princesses ready to run 13.1 miles.  I love the fireworks and each time I start at one of these races I get the chills!  My plan was to run /walk the distance in about 2:20-2:25.  My first mile went quickly and less than a few tenths into mile 2, Alison passed me and I cheered her on. During my next walk break, I heard a voice ask me what intervals I was doing.  It was Barbara Galloway and I replied 4/1, 4 minutes running, 1 minute walking.  After exchanging a few pleasantries, I was off for my next running interval.  Meanwhile, we seemed to be going at about the same pace overall, and I asked Barbara if I could join she and Jeff and another runner, MaryAlicia.  Their intervals were 30/20, 30 seconds running and 20 seconds walking.  Never having used any intervals but the 4/1, I thought this would be a great chance to see how shorter ones would work for me.  The miles flew by, and many more runners joined in our group which made the race go even more quickly.  I loved having people to chat with and MaryAlicia and I also enjoyed stopping for many photos along the way!

My photo adventure began with the pirates.  I was surprised to find only 2 people in line and so I made the decision to take character pics.

Who could resist these handsome footmen?  I am not certain what I was doing, but clearly they amused me!

This race was turning into a photo shoot and MaryAlicia and I stopped as often as possible quickly rejoining out group.  We even took this one with Princess Atta from A Bug's Life together!

The miles were ticking by and soon we were approaching the the last on ramp before we arrived back at Epcot.  Of course I needed to stop for the army man after seeing the fantastic photos our friend Danielle got during the Wine and Dine Half marathon weekend.  My assignment was five push ups, not too bad!

Shortly after arriving in Epcot I saw PeggySue, a runDisney cheerleader extraordinaire.  She has the same sign at every race and is so supportive of all the runners.  I was excited to get a photo with her and of course she offered me a treat from her supply!

Last of all was the fantastic gospel choir that sings to the runners as we round the corner to the finish line. It is always so exciting to see them at each and every race.

Jeff with his princess runners!

Medal time again!

It was so fun running into Kelly from Sparkle Athletic as I left the food area in search of my sister.  She looked so cute in her Merriwether costume!

Finally I met up with my sister to find out that she had run a 1:56 half marathon!  I was so excited for her and was certain that would give her an age group award!

                                                                                                                                      Two happy sisters

Christine sent me a text message to let us know Alison placed second in her age group! Now it was time to go celebrate in Magic Kingdom! Have you ever run a race for fun and taken photos?

  2. Thanks Monica, We both enjoyed our races, but I definitely got more bang for my buck since I was out there more than 30 minutes more than my sister!

  3. So fun! I have only done one runDisney race and I told myself that I was going to stop for pictures and enjoy it, but then I got out there and couldn't let myself stop. I think, as I mature as a runner, and get more races under my belt, I'll have the confidence to stop more and just go with the moment. It's funny, because I am registering for WDW marathon (as my first), and I'm doing it because I keep telling myself that no matter what, I will stop to ride Everest when I go through Animal Kingdom. I think I need to write it on the back of my shirt (MAKE THIS RUNNER STOP FOR EVEREST OR SHE WILL REGRET IT!) because I'm scared that I'll get there and talk myself out of it for pride's sake.

    1. Jennifer, I have not stopped during either of my marathons and Disney and I do not regret it. However, I really enjoyed stopping during this race and will certainly make decisions on whether to stop depending on weather and my training cycle. Good luck with the marathon. Having your first at Disney is a great plan!

  4. SO FUN! I think that having a race with no pressure is what keeps us from getting burned out. I'm so glad you had such a great experience! (And running with Jeff and Barbara? AWESOME!)

    1. Megan, I was actually surprised how much I enjoyed the weekend and races. Being with the right people and having specific goals can make the races better too. I hope to see you and Krista at GSC next year....oh and Christine too!

  5. I have definitely never taken so many pictures as I did with this race, although not as many with the characters (lines were too long by the time I got to them), but this was definitely a "fun run" for me! It was just too humid! It looks like you had soooo much fun and I stopped and took a "Danielle" picture with the army guy too! I remember seeing PeggySue in Disneyland and asked her about it as I ran by her. She is amazing! Congratulations to you and your sister on another great race!

Random question...I was doing 4/1 intervals (kinda) too, but how did you like the 30/20?

    1. Kellie, I was surprised how much I liked the 30/20 intervals. I do not have a gadget to time myself for short intervals and the 4/1 was always easy to calculate with my Garmin watch. I am debating buying one of those little gadgets that has a beeper for future use.

    2. The Garmin doesn't allow for that? Boo! Thanks for the input! I may try to give it a try on one of my long training runs! :)

  7. So fun! Yes...every Disney race I run is for fun and the photos! ;-) I can't believe there were only 2 people in line for the pirates when you got there! That's always one of the longest lines when I get there lol!

    1. Mindy, I was shocked by the lack of lines. I did start in corral B and I am certain that made a difference.

  8. This was my slowest half too (although only my second, haha) but I was so happy with it because I did the same thing; enjoyed the race and stopped for pictures!

  10. I did the first Tinkerbell with a group of friends and we stopped for every photo op there was in the parks. We claimed it was our first race with negative splits and we PR'd a slow race.

  11. Really looks like you had fun this race! Glad to see you ran with MaryAlicia! I have not met her yet but she won a giveaway on my blog recently! Do you remember if there was a marathonfoto photographer at the Fairy Godmother picture. We stopped there too to get a photo and the one I got with my personal camera did not turn out. I know marathonfoto is still going through pics, but I didn't see the one with the godmother and thought maybe they didn't have a photographer with her.

    1. I did not have any marathonfoto pics wt the Fairy Godmother. Maybe they did not put one there which is strange since I thought they always had a photographer with every character,

    1. Lynda, Only the Wine and Dine and Tower of Terror races start at night. The Princess starts at 5:30am, which seems like nighttime to those of us who don't wake up that early!

  15. Jen, I absolutely loved running with the group and taking photos. I needed to keep my pace slow (as per my running coach) and this make the miles fly by running with lots of fun people and stopping for character pics. Will definitely try this again!

    1. The race starts at 5:30 and you need to be in your corral by 5:00. We get on the bus around 3:30...yea, no fun, but with the heat, it is nice to have an early start!

  18. So I am not a runner, but that sounds so much fun and like something I would actually maybe like to do! Looks like you had a blast with the photos! :) And congrats to both of you for having a great fun race and for your sister for getting an award.

  23. Karen, I could not have asked for a better race, except of course for Christine to have been there too. It was great fun stopping for photos, but I was lucky with the lack of lines.
